Safety on the Site

“In light of recent on-site construction accidents, we are very concerned that workplace safety standards are not being met,” said Deputy Director of Employment Relations, Ms Joan Watler.

“Under the Labour Law (2001 Revised) employers can be fined CI$1,000 and subsequent charges of $100 daily, in addition to the closure of their worksite, until they comply with safety regulations,” explained Ms Watler.

Inspectors from the Department of Employment Relations are conducting impromptu on-site visits, to assess the level of safety procedures in place at construction sites and other high-risk workplaces. Recent findings have indicated that a substantial number of workplace safety standards are not being met.

Inspectors reported that essential protective equipment including harnesses, hardhats, goggles and hearing protection were not being used consistently; scaffolding was not being secured correctly and materials, including cement blocks, were not being stored safely.

Employers are reminded that they are legally obliged to register all workplaces with the Department of Employment Relations (within one month), disclosing details on the number of employees, as well as the type of work and machinery being used. They are also required to submit accident report forms for any major accident or disease affecting a workplace. Inspectors are currently distributing registration and accident report forms to employers.

“We are extremely concerned at the general lack of knowledge regarding workplace safety,” said Ms Watler. “To help educate employers, we are holding a two-day health and safety workshop next month and we advise them to attend.”

Workshop details will be announced as soon as possible. In the meantime, further information on employers’ responsibilities can be found at www.employmentservices.gov.ky or by calling the Department of Employment Relations on 945-3114.
