News Briefs - Culture
Artist Instructs on AestheticsSeveral local artists recently had the chance to study under Bendel Hydes, the Cayman Islands’ most celebrated artist. The ‘Aesthetics: Practical & Theory Workshop’, organised by the National Gallery, gave participants the opportunity to gain insight from both critical reviews and discourse on aesthetics. The artists explored a variety of mediums, creating sketches and maquettes for future work. National Gallery Holds Lunchtime LecturesCraving a bit of culture at lunchtimes? The National Gallery will be holding a monthly lunchtime tour around its latest exhibition “Watermarks” on Wednesday, 27 April, at 12.15pm. Many precious watercolours from private and public collections were destroyed during the hurricane and “Watermarks” creates a new collection capturing the vibrant surroundings of the Caymanian landscape. The lecture will last approximately 30 minutes. The National Gallery is located on the ground floor of Harbour Place, George Town. For information call 945 8111 or email nat.gal@candw.ky. The ‘Artists Away’ ProgrammeApplications are now being accepted for the National Gallery’s summer 2005 ‘Artists Away’ programme. Once a year, the National Gallery provides practising Caymanian artists with the opportunity to expand their visual arts skills in a foreign country over an intensive time period. The ‘Artists Away’ programme focuses on the utilisation of equipment and resources not available locally. In previous years, participants in the programme have travelled to Cuba to study printmaking and Italy to learn the craft of bronze casting. Interested artists should submit a proposal to the Gallery, outlining their area of interest, course details and estimated budget, along with a CV. For information and an application form call the National Gallery on 945 8111 or email curator.ng@candw.ky.
