New Sports Centre Will Have Punch!

Another symbol of resilience was noted this week with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new centre for the Islands' boxing aficionados.

Located in the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, the new boxing facility will accommodate physical fitness training and host tournaments and other events.

Once completed, the centre will feature a boxing ring, a training gymnasium, a training room, an office, bathrooms and space for equipment storage. The project will be launched with a $50,000 government grant to the Cayman Islands Amateur Boxing Association (CIABA). The association will then hold future fundraisers to complete work on the site.

Two qualified trainers -- Nayon Anglin and Tom Duffy - have been secured, and a third, George Kelly Foster, is currently being trained.

Until the new facility is completed, the association's offices and training gym have been re-located to the old CI Seafarers' Office behind the Cayman Islands Public Library, where training takes place Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. This building is slated for demolition when construction starts on the new library.
