Public Works to Restructure
In a bid to become more efficient and competitive, the Public Works Department (PWD) will undergo major restructuring over the next two years, following a recent organizational review completed by local consulting firm Deloitte. Speaking at the report’s launch, the Minister for Health Services, Agriculture, Aviation and Works, the Hon. Gilbert McLean, JP, said it was a historic moment as the review was the first formal study done for the PWD. It was also possibly the first time government shared such a report by providing copies to every employee in the department, Mr. McLean said. "The findings are important to every PWD employee. Not only does it show you where you are, but is also make recommendations on the way forward," he added.
Tobacco Act to be Developed
The Ministry of Health Services has appointed a Steering Committee, chaired by the Director of Public Health Dr. Kiran Kumar, to develop a Tobacco Act for the Cayman Islands. The aim is to implement the provisions of the world’s first public health treaty -- the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Minister for Health Services, the Hon. Gilbert McLean confirmed that the Governor in Cabinet gave approval for the extension of the FCTC treaty to the Cayman Islands. The minister said that the object of the treaty is "to protect present and future generations from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke."
