DOT Boosts Local Tourism Products

In the early months of Post-Ivan Cayman, with the dynamic of promoting the Cayman Islands changed, the Department of Tourism adjusted its budget to assist various local tourism products in rebuilding and rebounding in the wake of the storm. A total of US$850,000 was designated for this purpose.

Drawing on this budget, the DOT, in collaboration with various boards and associations, allocated approximately US$300,000 towards various projects around the Islands. These funds are being used to assist in the redevelopment and enhancement of local tourism products, including the new Cayman Craft Market, which suffered major damage during Ivan.

Funds have also been directed to the daunting reality of mould. The DOT has been coordinating mould remediation activities with the expertise of the Department of Environmental Health. Together they are working to ensure that members of the tourism and construction industries have the knowledge and skill to ensure that appropriate measures have been or will be applied to ensuring safe environments for all patrons.

The DOT has also committed to helping restore the natural beauty of Cayman. One project they are working on entails joining with Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) to clean up litter along the roadways. To participate in this effort (which takes place 2-3 April), please contact CITA at 949-8522.

DOT and CITA are also working jointly to improve signage in the area of central George Town and to and from the Owen Roberts International Airport. Efforts are also focused on beautifying the public areas at Owen Roberts, particularly with respect to arrival and departures.

While the main work of the department is now in full swing, the department will continue efforts to assist in recovery and reconstruction activities for select products.
