Don't Neglect InspectionsHurricane Ivan may have destroyed many homes and businesses throughout Grand Cayman, but it has decidedly not blown away the entrepreneurial spirit. In the immediate aftermath, many restaurants, bars, and lounges quickly rebounded, bringing hot meals and cool drinks to see us through the recovery phase. Speaking about the role that these enterprises played in meeting needs in the early weeks and months post-Ivan, Liquor Licensing Board Chairman Mitchell Welds said: “Some businesses faced severe damage that would take months to rebuild,” adding, “With admirable creativity they moved their businesses onto parking lots or porches, allowing them to generate some kind of income for their staff while providing an invaluable service to those working hard at rebuilding.” He said that their response brought some welcome relief for many from the many stresses of the day. “We recognized the need for that, especially right after the storm,” the chairman said. For premises licensed to dispense alcohol some leniency was therefore afforded (although the Liquor Licensing Board of Grand Cayman remained vigilant in ensuring the public’s safety to the best of its ability). The downside is that now, six months after Ivan, many businesses have reopened without receiving the proper inspections— including that of the Liquor Licensing Inspector. Mr. Welds is therefore reminding all proprietors of licensed premises that facilities are required by law to be re-inspected if they have been rebuilt or renovated. The inspections—which include fire, environmental health and planning—should be completed and approved prior to reopening. Those who have not been inspected by the board should immediately contact the secretary of the board, Ms Marva Scott-Dunbar, at 525-7893. Business owners who do not intend to reopen should also notify the secretary. “We are very pleased with the number of businesses now reopened. It truly shows the spirit and commitment these owners have to continue providing food, beverage and entertainment services,” says Mr. Welds. “I hope that we can continue to work together to ensure that high standards are maintained in all licensed premises.”
