Schools’ Re-opening Steps up TempoThe continued programme of re-opening of schools continued this week, with a stand-down of all school shelters and increasing tempo of health and safety inspections. Many schools suffered substantial damage, delaying anticipated opening dates, whilst others were being used as shelters for residents whose property was damaged. Two schools were also being used as clinics. This was being resolved this week, with the closure of all shelters accommodated on school sites. At week’s end, shelter occupants were being moved to the East End Civic Centre, which will be the sole remaining shelter. In addition, the Ministry has been working with the Department of Environmental Health and a private company to ensure that classrooms are free of mould and any other hazards. In some cases, this work has delayed the scheduled reopening. However, the Ministry is putting the health and safety of the students first. In light of this, schools have opened wherever possible but are mainly operating as learning centres. These centres are focusing on core subjects and a range of enrichment opportunities and are not able to accommodate the full school population. Students who have gone overseas are encouraged to remain to complete the full term. The following are the current proposed opening dates for schools (as at 28 October). Members of the public should be aware that this may be subject to change: The Lighthouse School – Re-opened 25 October.
