Safely Managing Fires

You may want to burn yard debris to cleanup after Hurricane Ivan. The Cayman Islands Fire Department (CIFD) and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) have safety tips to follow if you need to light a fire.

“Fires that are supervised and well-managed can eliminate yard debris,” notes Chief Fire Officer Kirkland Nixon. “However, fires need to be built safely to ensure there is no risk to people or property.” He emphasizes that it’s important to remember that smoke can be an irritant: “Practice being a good neighbour and inform those living nearby of your plans; burn only during daylight hours or when laundry and yard work is not being done.”
