Disaster Assistance Centres to Come

The Cabinet gave its blessings this week to establishing district Disaster Assistance Centres (DACs) to provide residents with support and information necessary to recovery from the varied impacts of Hurricane Ivan.

Joining forces with CIRO in establishing the centres, the Ministry of Community Affairs has offered the services of its Special Project Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Surrat, and the services of district Community Affairs Officers. Some MLAs have also offered use of their district offices and the private sector has proposed making staff available for service in the centres.

Meanwhile, CIRO was advancing Wednesday with mapping out arrangements for the establishing of DACs. This included identifying a coordinator, site managers, determining staffing requirements, and the services that would be provided.

Publications on services and helpful information are also expected to be produced to assist the public, relative to projects such as rebuilding and clean up and human concerns.

Further details will be provided as the project develops, with an early announcement expected on the start of the programme.
