- Our first post-Ivan cruise ships are to return on 1 November, with a total of ten expected over the course of the week. This is extremely momentous, and I credit the dedication of many hardworking people within the private and public sectors for this achievement.
- Chamber of Commerce Offers Free Courses
- In recognition of business needs and the personal trauma that many people may suffer as a result of Hurricane Ivan, the Chamber of Commerce has announced a serious of free forums and workshops, beginning next week.
- Clean Up Cayman Hits High Gear
- Dubbed “Clean up Cayman,” the Chamber of Commerce’s campaign began on Saturday, 23 October, and will continue as long as donations are received, said C of C’s CEO Wil Pineau. The drive will expand to all of George Town and ultimately to the outer districts.
- Counseling Update
- Much has changed in the weeks following Ivan and many of our routines and living situations are not what they were. Though life is “getting back to normal” we must admit that Ivan was a traumatic event and that stress can impact our lives.
- Disaster Assistance Centres to Come
- The Cabinet gave its blessings this week to establishing district Disaster Assistance Centres (DACs) to provide residents with support and information necessary to recovery from the varied impacts of Hurricane Ivan.
- Document Recovery Expertise
Document restoration experts BELFOR Canada have been hired by government to recover wet paper documents damaged during Hurricane Ivan.
- Down the Marl Road
- The police have reported that there are no outstanding Ivan-related “missing persons.” There were a few such reports immediately after Ivan, but these have all been happily resolved.
- Government Solutions for Small Business
- With small business owners needing support to “stay afloat” while wider commercial activities regain momentum during this rebuilding phase, Government is in the process of organizing a loan plan specifically geared towards small business owners.
- Lady Retiree Rebuilds Island Home
- Regardless of birthplace, the human ability to adapt, share and overcome the hazards of nature is perhaps what separates us most clearly from – and has allowed us dominion over – the animal kingdom. Common stereotypes are set aside when, in times of challenge, the survival spirit activates, as it has on Grand Cayman since September 11.

- Port Workers on the Ball
- While CIRO wrestless with expediting movements of cargo, Port Authority staff and related agencies have been burning the midnight oil – literally – to accommodate the almost quadrupled demand.
- Public Safety
- You may want to burn yard debris to cleanup after Hurricane Ivan. The Cayman Islands Fire Department (CIFD) and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) have safety tips to follow if you need to light a fire.
- Schools’ Re-opening Steps up Tempo
- The continued programme of re-opening of schools continued this week, with a stand-down of all school shelters and increasing tempo of health and safety inspections.
- Small Business Recovery Forum
- The Cayman Islands Investment Bureau, in conjunction with the Employment Services Centre and the Cayman Islands Development Bank, is pleased to invite all small business owners to participate in a Small Business Recovery Forum. The event is geared to small-business owners, but open to the general public and will be held on November 3rd, 2004 at the Westin Casuarina Resort & Spa, Governor’s Ballroom, Salon A from 4pm until 6pm. Registration is not required.
- Tourism Routes a Priority
- Acleanup of beaches and dive sites along the Seven Mile Beach corridor and north and east coasts will begin this weekend (30/31 October), in preparation for next week’s cruise ship arrivals. It will continue every weekend until 14 November.
