Temporary Housing Moves Ahead

A plan to import ten trailers as a prelude to larger numbers moves ahead next week when two government officials travel overseas to take a closer look at the trailers and to expedite transport to the Cayman Islands.

Permanent Secretary Joy Basdeo heads the CIRO subcommittee that is spearheading the project. Providing this pilot phase works successfully, up to 75 trailers could be ordered.

The trailers are meant to serve a need for temporary housing while houses are being repaired or rebuilt.

Figures on the number of people who are currently “homeless” comprise a “moving target,” but it is known that there are still unsuitably accommodated persons from all strata: teachers, medical personnel and other professionals, as well as persons from a range of technical, skilled and non-skilled occupational spheres.

In the meantime, government has been attacking the problem from a number of directions: work groups are being established in districts under the supervision of government- appointed building contractors, and grants totaling up to $25,000 are jointly available from two local funds, one entirely government-based.

Churches are also working closely with government agencies in distributing building supplies donated to the Cayman Islands by overseas donors.

An administrative office is shortly to be established. In the meantime, persons interested in exploring a trailer as an option are asked to call 525-2476 (525-CIRO).
