Curfew LiftedThe Royal Cayman Islands Police (RCIP) Commissioner of Police, Mr. Buel Braggs, announced on Thursday, 9 November, that the curfew, which has been in place since Hurricane Ivan, has now been lifted. The curfew had been gradually relaxed, reducing from its original dusk to dawn in the early days after Ivan to its latest 12 mid-night to 5am. restriction. The improvement of lighting conditions has eased concerns about late night travel, the primary reason for lifting the curfew. Caribbean Utilities Company has assured RCIP that areas of the Grand Cayman that were of concern due to poor lighting will be illuminated by this weekend. Commissioner Braggs said: “The RCIP thanks the residents of Grand Cayman for their cooperation and patience during the time the curfew was in effect. Thanks should also be extended to CUC for its hard work in returning electricity to the island.” The RCIP will assure a strong police presence this weekend, with the anticipated pre-Christmas parties and the excitement that can be expected on lifting of the curfew. The RCIP warns, however, that it will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers, speeders and other traffic offenders. For the last few months the RCIP has been lenient on drivers with damaged vehicles but will begin ticketing vehicles deemed roadworthy or that are unlicensed. RCIP also reminds drivers that driving vehicles that are not currently licensed or insured is an offence for which they can be arrested.
